Arie Dirk became a sailor at age 14 because he really disliked school and became a steward. He was torpedoed 3 times, last time in the Northern Ice sea. His feet were frozen: he found his way to England via Murmansk. Worked for the Dutch Ministry of Finance and worked in the Dutch consulate until his death in 1988.
